Schloss Berge
Gelsenkirchen, Germany, Germany
Schloss Berge in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, originated as a 13th-century moated house that protected the local settlement, later transformed into a castle around 1530 by Georg von Boenen.
In 1788, after the family was elevated to counts, architect Engelbert Kleinhanz rebuilt it in neoclassical style with three wings enclosing a courtyard, adding a south wing and expanding the grounds to include a French baroque garden from 1700 and an English landscape park.
The city acquired it in 1924, turning the 72-hectare park into a recreational area; today, the restored castle operates as a hotel and restaurant beside Berger See lake, with features like a winter garden added in 2004.
