Schloss Brake
Lemgo, Germany, Germany
Schloss Brake in Lemgo, Germany, is a moated Renaissance castle built around 1190 by Count Bernhard II of Lippe on the foundations of one of northern Germany's largest medieval fortresses, later expanded with a striking tower and north wing from 1584 under Count Simon VI.
Serving as a princely residence with opulent interiors, a chapel, library, and banqueting hall, it endured conquests, widow's seat phases, demolitions, brewery conversion, and district offices before becoming the Weser Renaissance Museum in 1986.
Surrounded by historic mills, a wash house, and parklands, the site now showcases 16th-17th century art, culture, and innovation through exhibits, concerts, and events in this Hanseatic town's landmark.
