Schloss Brennhausen
Sulzdorf an der Lederhecke, Germany
Schloss Brennhausen, located in Sulzdorf an der Lederhecke in Bavaria, Germany, is a moated medieval castle with a history tracing back to at least 1182.
Originally built as a fortified residence, it played an important role in the region’s feudal landscape. The castle was heavily damaged in 1525 during the German Peasants’ War, when local revolts swept across Bavaria, and was subsequently rebuilt soon after.
Over the centuries, it passed through several noble families, including the Truchseß von Wetzhausen and the Günther von Brennhausen line, before coming under the ownership of the influential von Bibra family in 1681, who still maintain it today. The structure features elements of Gothic and early Renaissance architecture, including thick stone walls, arched gateways, and an inner courtyard surrounded by historic residential buildings.
Surrounded by the peaceful forests and lakes of the Haßberge Nature Park, the castle was restored in later years and remains privately owned, no longer open to the public. Schloss Brennhausen stands as a well-preserved example of rural nobility’s residences in northern Bavaria, reflecting centuries of political change, family heritage, and architectural evolution.
