Schloss Deidesheim
Deidesheim, Germany, Germany
Schloss Deidesheim is a historic moated castle in Deidesheim, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, originating as a 13th-century water fortress built by the Prince-Bishops of Speyer to protect their territory during conflicts between the Staufen emperors and rival claimants.
First documented in 1292 when Bishop Friedrich hosted King Adolf of Nassau, it served as the episcopal administration seat for local taxes and residences, integrated into town walls from 1360, with major fortifications in 1478 including a widened moat and large office building.
Destroyed in 1689 during the War of the Palatine Succession, it was rebuilt in Baroque style and now functions as a restaurant and event venue amid the Palatinate wine region's heritage.
