Schloss Dornburg an der Elbe
Gommern, Germany
Schloss Dornburg an der Elbe in Gommern, Germany, is a Baroque palace partially designed by the notable architect Friedrich Joachim Stengel in the mid-18th century. It was commissioned by Princess Johanna Elisabeth of Anhalt-Zerbst as a country residence and widow’s retreat.
The palace complex was originally planned as an extensive layout including multiple wings and pavilions; however, only the central part, known as the Corps de Logis, was completed. The castle was never fully furnished or inhabited by its intended royal residents due to conflicts such as the Seven Years' War. Over time, the castle changed ownership and served various functions.
Though some structural parts remain in poor condition, efforts by preservation groups aim to protect and restore it as a significant historical and architectural site reflecting the elegance of the late Baroque period along the Elbe River.
