Schloss Freudenstein
Freiberg, Germany, Germany
Schloss Freudenstein is a Renaissance castle in the heart of Freiberg, Saxony, Germany, originally built around 1168 by Margrave Otto II of Meissen to protect nearby silver mines.
First documented as a "house" in 1312, it served as a key residence for the Wettin dynasty, where Duke Henry the Pious lived after 1505 and his sons—future electors Moritz and Augustus—were born.
Rebuilt grandly from 1566 to 1577 under Elector August by architect Hans Irmisch into a four-winged complex, it endured the Thirty Years' War as a defensive outpost, suffered interior destruction in the Seven Years' War, and later functioned as an armory, granary, hospital, and storage before becoming a museum in recent decades housing mining archives and the vast Terra Mineralia mineral collection.
