Schloss Goseck
Goseck, Germany, Germany
Schloss Goseck in Goseck, Germany, originated as a Frankish fortress first mentioned around 880, later transformed into a Benedictine monastery in 1041 by Frederick of Goseck with a Romanesque church featuring an underground crypt.
Secularized in 1539, it stood largely abandoned until 1602 when Bernhard von Pölnitz rebuilt it as a Renaissance three-winged palace incorporating surviving church elements like the choir and transept.
Today, the dilapidated yet evocative structure hosts occasional cultural events, concerts, and exhibitions on its layered history amid the scenic Saale Valley.
