Schloss Grillenburg
Tharandt, Germany, Germany
Schloss Grillenburg, located near Tharandt in Germany's Tharandter Wald forest, began as a 12th-century margravial hunting lodge possibly used by Emperor Frederick Barbarossa, evolving into a Renaissance hunting palace built in the 1550s under Elector Frederick Augustus with structures like the prince's house, hunter's house, slaughterhouse, and staff quarters using stones from nearby Burg Tharandt.
It served as the seat of Saxon forestry and hunting administration for centuries, surviving fires, wars, and rebuilds—including a 1730 Sandstein bridge—until much was demolished in 1828, leaving mainly the slaughterhouse and walls, later repurposed as a café, inn, and Nazi-era hunter's residence before becoming a forestry museum today.
