Verified Schloss Herrenhausen

Hanover, Germany, Germany

Schloss Herrenhausen is a former royal summer residence of the House of Hanover in the Herrenhausen district of Hanover, Lower Saxony, and it forms the architectural centerpiece of the Herrenhausen Garden complex.

The palace began as a princely farm and small manor in the 17th century, was gradually expanded into an electoral and later royal summer palace, and then rebuilt in a neoclassical three‑winged style between 1819 and 1821 by the architect Georg Ludwig Friedrich Laves under King George IV.

During the Second World War the building was almost entirely destroyed, but it was reconstructed between 2009 and 2013 to resemble its 19th‑century appearance, with a modern interior that now houses a museum run by the Historisches Museum Hannover as well as a conference and event center.

Today Schloss Herrenhausen is closely linked to the surrounding Herrenhausen Gardens—the Baroque Great Garden, the Hill Garden, and the Georgen Garden—making it both a cultural venue and the historic focal point of one of Germany’s most famous garden ensembles.
