Verified Schloss Hoppenrade

Löwenberger Land, Germany

Schloss Hoppenrade in Löwenberger Land, Germany, originated as a moated castle around 1541, built by the von Bredow family. In 1724, Johann Heinrich von Bredow transformed it into a one-story three-wing Baroque manor, funded by the wealth of his wife, Constantia von Kraut.

Between 1790 and 1809, the castle's main building was elevated to two stories and remodeled in the late Baroque and early Neoclassical styles under the direction of Luise Charlotte Henriette von Kraut, known as the "Krautentochter." The castle complex includes a former village and patron church, and it was historically a center for aristocratic life and festivities, even during French occupation. The estate passed through several noble families, including the von Arnstedt and von Werthern clans, until the von Werthern family were expropriated in 1945.

The castle underwent restoration in recent years and is privately owned, with its park and chapel accessible to visitors. The castle is also known from Theodor Fontane’s writings, which highlighted its historical and cultural significance.
