Verified Schloss Igling

Igling, Germany

Schloss Igling has a rich history dating back to the early 12th century, first mentioned in 1126 as the domain of the noble Rüdiger and Eglof von Igelingen.

The original fortress was built by the Hohenstaufen dynasty on a nearby hill to control important routes along the Lech and Wertach rivers. After the earlier castle was destroyed, around 1215 a new castle was constructed at the current Schloss Igling site.

In the 14th century, the Dukes of Bavaria took ownership of the castle through the "Konradinische Schenkung." Over time, various noble families, including Karl Gelnhofer, Schwikker von Gundelfingen, and Freiherr von Donnersberg, owned the castle; the latter began a castle rebuild in 1620, parts of which remain today, including the castle chapel. The castle faced plundering during the Thirty Years' War but was later rebuilt in the 19th century in a neo-Gothic style by Count Spaur.

Since 1866, it has been owned by the Maldeghem family. The Schloss Igling area is now known for a golf course located near the castle, reflecting its blend of historical significance and modern use.
