Schloss Lichtenstein
Lichtenstein, Baden-Württemberg, Germany
Schloss Lichtenstein in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, is a striking Gothic Revival castle built between 1840 and 1842 on the foundations of a medieval castle dating back to around 1100. The current castle was commissioned by Count Wilhelm of Urach, inspired by Wilhelm Hauff’s 1826 novel "Lichtenstein," reflecting the 19th-century Romantic fascination with medieval knights and architecture.
Located on a cliff in the Swabian Jura overlooking the Echaz valley, it combines medieval fortress elements with fanciful neo-Gothic design, featuring curtain walls, towers, and a richly decorated interior. Despite its medieval appearance, the castle is relatively young and has been a residence of the Dukes of Urach since the 19th century.
It was damaged in World War II but has undergone restoration, remaining privately owned and admired as a fairytale-like landmark known for its historical charm and scenic location.
