Schloss Liebieg
Kobern-Gondorf, Germany
Schloss Liebieg, located in Kobern-Gondorf, Germany, originated as the Gondorfer Niederburg castle built in the mid-12th century, first inhabited by Knight Engelbertus de Contrave.
Over the centuries, it changed ownership multiple times and was looted and destroyed by French troops during the French Revolution in 1794-95.
The castle was later acquired by Koblenz merchant Simon Clemens and passed to his son Johann Peter Clemens, who rebuilt it into a rural castle in a neo-Gothic style around 1860 with renovations by architect Vincenz Statz.
Around 1900, the noble von Liebieg family, prominent industrialists and art collectors from Bohemia, took possession after Theodor von Liebieg married Angelika Clemens. They added a neo-Romanesque extension and maintained the castle as a cultural and aristocratic residence.
