Schloss Ludwigseck
Ludwigsau, Germany, Germany
Schloss Ludwigseck is a historic fortified castle (Wehrburg) in the rural community of Ludwigsau, Hersfeld-Rotenburg district, northeastern Hesse, Germany, perched on a basalt cone overlooking the Fulda River valley and Seulingswald forests.
Originally built around 1419 as a defensive burg by the knights of Röhrenfurth and Holzheim under Landgrave Ludwig I of Hesse, it was largely destroyed in the Thirty Years' War, rebuilt as a palace around 1677, fell into decay by the 18th century, and underwent major 1856 Historicism renovations by architect Hugo von Ritgen for the Riedesel zu Eisenbach family.
Privately owned by the von und zu Gilsa family since the 1980s, it features stone walls, towers, a residential wing, and ongoing preservation efforts, with limited access and emerging guesthouse accommodations amid scenic hiking country.
