Schloss Lützen
Lützen, Germany, Germany
Schloss Lützen is a historic castle in Lützen, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, first mentioned in 1252 as a simple fortified structure built by the Bishops of Merseburg to guard trade routes toward Leipzig, later expanded with a moat and chapel by the 14th century.
In 1538, Bishop Sigismund von Lindenau transformed it into a Renaissance moated palace, which served as Albrecht von Wallenstein's headquarters just before the pivotal 1632 Battle of Lützen during the Thirty Years' War.
Owned by various nobles until acquired by the town in 1884, it now houses a museum opened in 1928 focused on local history, regional battles, and architectural evolution through Baroque modifications.
