Schloss Moosham near Unternberg in Austria dates back to at least 1191 and was possibly built on the foundations of a Roman fortress.

It became the residence of an episcopal burgrave under the Prince-Archbishops of Salzburg from the 14th century. The castle was expanded and modernized in the late 15th century by Prince-Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach, who made significant additions to its structure.

Throughout history, the castle witnessed numerous conflicts, including the German Peasants’ War and was the administrative center during the infamous Zaubererjackl witch trials between 1675 and 1690, where 139 people were executed, including many children. After falling into disrepair in the late 18th century, the castle was restored in 1886 by Count Johann Nepomuk Wilczek, who preserved its medieval character.

Today, the castle remains in the Wilczek family and functions as a museum showcasing a rich collection of art and history. Schloss Moosham is also known for legends of werewolves, adding a mysterious aura to its dark historical legacySchloss Moosham.
