Schloss Moritzburg
Zeitz, Germany, Germany
Schloss Moritzburg in Zeitz, Germany, is an early Baroque residence built from 1657 on the ruins of a medieval bishop's castle destroyed in the Thirty Years' War.
Duke Moritz of Saxony commissioned architects Johann Moritz Richter and his son to create a three-winged fortress-like palace incorporating the Gothic cathedral as a castle church, complete with bastioned fortifications, a moat, and a monumental gatehouse.
After serving as a ducal seat until 1718, it later functioned as a school and prison before becoming a museum highlighting regional history and art.
