Schloss Mutzschen
Grimma, Germany, Germany
Schloss Mutzschen, located in Mutzschen near Grimma in Saxony, Germany, originated as a fortified settlement around 1060, evolving into a noble residence by 1206 under owners like Cunradus de Mutsin, later passing to the Burgraves of Leising by 1308 and the von Starschedel family around 1400.
Acquired by Elector August I of Saxony in 1556 and sold to the Döring family in 1622, it burned down completely in 1681 during a town fire but was rebuilt in simple Baroque style by 1703 on orders from August the Strong for use as a hunting lodge annex, with further expansions by Heinrich von Canitz in 1752–1754 including an altan and gatehouse.
Used as an officers' quarters in the Seven Years' War, it changed hands among families like Gaudich, Steinbrück, and Naumann into the 20th century, serving post-WWII as a youth school, hostel until 1999, and later eyed for tourism development.
