Schloss Neuwied
Neuwied, Germany, Germany
Schloss Neuwied in Neuwied, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, is a Baroque residence originally built from 1646-1648 by Count Friedrich III zu Wied as the family's new seat near the Rhine, replacing the aging Altwied Castle and shaping the town's development after receiving city privileges in 1653.
Destroyed by French troops in 1694 during the War of the Palatine Succession, it was rebuilt from 1706-1712 in Rhineland-Nassau Classicist style by architect Johann Julius Rothweil, inspired by Versailles' horseshoe layout but partially realized with three wings around a courtyard, mansard roofs, and Italian stucco interiors by Gemone and Castelli.
Completed in 1748-1756 under Karl Behaghel von Adlerskron—who also designed nearby Monrepos—the castle later served military, administrative, and educational roles, now housing the Rhineland-Palatinate State Music Academy with preserved festive halls.
