Schloss Nickern
Dresden, Germany, Germany
Schloss Nickern is a charming moated castle in Dresden's Nickern district, Germany, originating from a 12th-century water fortress owned by the Knights of Karas before being transformed into a Renaissance residence around 1511 by Georg von Alnpeck.
Expanded in 1622 by Johann Georg von Osterhausen and remodeled in rural Baroque style by 1693 under Hans von Bose with a mansard roof and central portal, it gained its iconic clock tower in 1870 under Friedrich August Winkler, overlooking terraced grounds and the village below.
Expropriated in 1945, it served as housing after a 1960 fire, briefly as a cultural center until 2000, and now stands privately owned with a restaurant called Altnickerner Schloßstübel since 2005 amid preserved farm structures.
