Schloss Nordkirchen
Nordkirchen, Germany, Germany
Schloss Nordkirchen in Nordkirchen, Germany, is a grand Baroque palace built between 1703 and 1734, often called the "Versailles of Westphalia" as the largest moated Wasserschloss in the region and an original residence of the Prince-Bishopric of Münster.
Commissioned by Prince-Bishop Ferdinand von Plettenberg with designs by architects like J.C. Schlaun, it features a central corps de logis with symmetrical wings around a courtyard, surrounded by expansive parks blending French formal gardens, a Venus Island with statues, and later English landscape elements.
Today the fully moated estate houses the Hochschule für Finanzen NRW academy, with its meticulously maintained 240-hectare grounds open year-round for free walks, guided tours of interiors and gardens, and events, drawing visitors to admire its UNESCO-recognized total work of art amid Münsterland scenery.
