Schloss Nossen
Nossen, Germany, Germany
Schloss Nossen, perched above the Freiberger Mulde River in Nossen, Saxony, Germany, began as a 12th-century knights' manor first mentioned in 1185 under the Knights of Nuzzin, later acquired by Meissen Bishops in 1315 and sold to Altzella Monastery in 1436, serving as an abbot's retreat until the Reformation.
Elector Maurice rebuilt it from 1554 using monastery rubble into a Renaissance castle with west wing towers echoing Moritzburg and a grand "Giant Hall," transforming it into a hunting lodge and administrative seat for Augustus the Strong, who briefly imprisoned Countess Cosel there in 1716 before her transfer to Stolpen.
Used for offices, courts with dungeons, and museums through the 19th–20th centuries, it was taken over by Saxony's State Palaces in 1993, now hosting exhibitions on Saxon nobility and medieval justice amid its preserved Renaissance shell.
