Schloss Persenbeug
Persenbeug-Gottsdorf, Austria, Austria
Schloss Persenbeug is a historic castle in the small market town of Persenbeug‑Gottsdorf in Lower Austria, perched on a rocky terrace high above the north bank of the Danube and directly overlooking the Donaukraftwerk Persenbeug hydropower plant.
It is one of the oldest noble seats in the region, first mentioned in documents from 883, and over the centuries passed through the hands of Bavarian counts, Habsburg emperors, and the Hoyos family before being acquired by the Habsburg‑Lothringen dynasty, which still uses it today as a private residence.
The complex combines medieval origins with later Baroque and Biedermeier‑style modifications, and it is famous as the birthplace of the last Austro‑Hungarian emperor, Karl I, in 1887; the castle is privately owned, so it is generally not open for interior tours, but its imposing riverside silhouette remains a striking landmark visible from the Danube valley and nearby cycle paths.
