Schloss Philippsburg
Braubach, Germany, Germany
Schloss Philippsburg in Braubach, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, is an early Renaissance palace built from 1568 to 1571 by Landgrave Philipp II of Hessen-Rheinfels as a comfortable dower residence for his wife Anna Elisabeth, replacing the austere nearby Marksburg castle.
Designed by architects Anton Dauer and Jost Scheffer with a showy facade, fortifications, and multiple wings around courtyards, it symbolized the shift from medieval hill forts to lowland palaces while serving as a southern gate to Braubach.
Sold in 1822 to a local entrepreneur, it underwent alterations losing its original grandeur, including outer works demolished for a railway in 1861, and now stands privately owned with a historic wine cellar amid modern uses.
