Schloss Pietzpuhl
Germany, Germany
Schloss Pietzpuhl near Möckern in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, first appears in records from 1306 as the Slavic settlement Putzpul, which lay deserted until a late 15th-century Vorwerk replaced it, only to be destroyed in the Thirty Years' War.
Werner von Wulffen commissioned its 1725-1730 Baroque replacement—a simple two-story plastered rectangle over a high basement with mansard roof, central risalits, and lavish interiors like stucco, doors, fireplaces, and an asymmetric staircase—that his descendants expanded with two Kavaliershäuser.
Carl von Wulffen created the southern English landscape park from 1808-1828 with winding paths, bridges, ditches, and ponds on poor soils where he pioneered modern farming techniques taught at Prussia's Möglin academy; expropriated from the family in 1945, it housed refugees until 1965, was reclaimed by the von Wulffens in 1997, and now stands protected with one Kavaliershaus as a café and event space.
