Schloss Reuschenberg
Neuss, Germany, Germany
Schloss Reuschenberg in Neuss, Germany, traces its origins to a small knight's estate first documented in 1284 near Selikum, owned by the knights of Selinchein (later Selickhem) under the Church of Neuss, which was destroyed by robber barons between 1582 and 1587, forcing the von Reuschenberg family to abandon it.
Rebuilt by 1615 as a moated manor house on an artificial island surrounded by the Erft River, it was transformed into a castle around 1840 by Baron Carl von Boeselager, who added new farm buildings, before hosting a women's agricultural school from 1912 until wartime bomb damage in 1943 and closure in 1997.
Now privately owned and not open to the public, this medieval water castle with its preserved brick gatehouse stands as a photogenic landmark amid greenery, rewarding walkers with views of its historic motte and settlement history near the Rhine.
