Schloss Rheydt
Mönchengladbach, Germany
Schloss Rheydt in Mönchengladbach, Germany, is a well-preserved Renaissance water castle dating back to the 12th century, with its current form largely shaped between 1558 and 1591.
Commissioned by Otto von Bylandt and designed by architect Maximilian Pasqualini, the castle features an outer gatehouse, an outer bailey, and a main residential building surrounded by moats filled with water from the Niers river. Its architecture blends Italian Renaissance style with Dutch influences, evident in the façade's sculptural decoration and the richly adorned interiors with fireplaces, tiles, and murals.
The castle was historically a fortified residence with bastions and casemates for defense. It remained in the hands of noble families, particularly the Bylandt family, for over 300 years and has undergone few major alterations since. Today, it serves as the Municipal Museum of Mönchengladbach, hosting exhibitions on art and local history.
The castle complex is also a cultural venue and recreational area, uniquely standing as the only fully preserved Renaissance castle complex on the Lower Rhine.
