Schloss Sommerschenburg
Sommersdorf, Germany, Germany
Schloss Sommerschenburg in Sommersdorf, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, began as a 10th-century circular fortress likely built by King Heinrich I to defend against Slavic invasions, featuring double moats, ramparts, and a 13th-century Romanesque keep that's 30 meters tall.
Destroyed in 1192 during regional conflicts but quickly rebuilt, it passed to the Archbishopric of Magdeburg by 1208, suffered devastation in the Thirty Years' War, and became a Brandenburg-Prussian domain from 1680 until granted to Prussian field marshal August Neidhardt von Gneisenau in 1814.
The current neo-Gothic palace section, constructed 1895-1897 by architect Doberentz with Renaissance elements like verandas and gables, incorporates the ancient bergfried and overlooks a park with Gneisenau's mausoleum; post-1945 land reforms repurposed it as a care home, cultural center, and school.
