Schloss Stadthagen
Stadthagen, Germany, Germany
Schloss Stadthagen in Stadthagen, Germany, is one of the earliest and most influential Renaissance palaces in Lower Saxony, constructed between 1535 and 1539 by master builder Jörg Unkair for Count Adolf XIII of Schaumburg on the site of a 13th-century moated fortress.
The quadrangular four-wing complex features distinctive half-circular gables topped with decorative spheres, ornate Flemish chimneys by sculptor Arend Robin depicting the Triumph of Elements and Four Seasons, and a preserved 15th-century gatehouse in the west wing.
Originally the counts' residence until 1607 and later a widow's seat, it now serves as the local tax office owned by the state of Lower Saxony, with guided interior tours available by prior arrangement amid its surrounding park.
