Schloss Stutensee
Stutensee, Germany, Germany
Schloss Stutensee is a baroque-style castle located near the geographic center of the town of Stutensee in the Karlsruhe district of Baden-Württemberg, Germany, and it actually gave the town its name when four villages merged in 1975.
The castle was originally built in 1749 by Margrave Karl Friedrich of Baden as a hunting lodge (Jagdschloss) in the French classical baroque style, designed by Italian architect Leopoldo Retti and constructed using stones from the nearby ruined Schloss Staffort. Its name comes from the princely stud farm (Gestüt) founded here in 1652 to improve agriculture and defense, which was expanded over the years near fish ponds created around 1550–1560.
The castle grounds feature an old garden with numerous ancient oak trees registered as natural monuments, including one estimated to be 900 years old. From 1891 to 1922, the Karlsruhe local railway to Spöck passed directly by the castle with a stop here, though today the modern S2 line runs farther west without stopping.
