Schloss Varchentin
Groß Plasten, Germany, Germany
Schloss Varchentin in Groß Plasten, Germany, is a striking Tudor Gothic-style manor house built in 1847 by Hamburg merchant Gottlieb Jenisch to designs by Swiss architect Auguste de Meuron, set within a 20-hectare landscape park by Peter Joseph Lenné beside the 54-hectare Kleine Varchentiner See.
Later owned by the Counts Grote who added a south wing and a Neorenaissance mausoleum in 1895, it suffered looting after 1945, served as a forestry school in the GDR era, and saw failed hotel plans before standing vacant and for sale as of 2015.
Today, the protected heritage site amid scenic lakes and rare trees draws hikers exploring its overgrown grounds and rich architectural layers near Müritz National Park.
