Schloss Voigtsberg
Oelsnitz, Germany, Germany
Schloss Voigtsberg is a medieval hill castle turned Renaissance palace in Oelsnitz/Vogtland, Saxony, Germany, founded around 1200 by the Vögte von Straßberg with a bergfried tower, palas hall, and defensive walls, first documented in 1249 under Eberhardus de Voitesberk.
Expanded after 1300 by Vogt Heinrich III. with round towers and the Gothic St. Georgskapelle integrated into the curtain wall, it passed to the Vögte von Plauen in 1327 and the Wettin margraves of Meissen by 1356, serving as an electoral office until the Thirty Years' War destruction prompted 1633 rebuilding.
Repurposed over centuries as a mining office, prison, refugee camp, and military barracks before becoming a city-owned museum complex since 1967 with carpet exhibits, mineral collection, restored Fürstensaal, and accessible bergfried offering valley views.
