Schloss Wackerbarth
Radebeul, Germany, Germany
Schloss Wackerbarth is a Baroque palace nestled amid vineyards in Radebeul, Saxony, Germany, built between 1727 and 1730 by Count August Christoph von Wackerbarth, a close confidant of Augustus the Strong, as a serene retirement estate during Dresden's architectural golden age.
Designed by architect Johann Christoph Knöffel, it features a central manor with wings, terraced gardens, and a Belvedere summerhouse overlooking the Elbe Valley, later hosting lavish Saxon court parties and becoming Germany's second-oldest sparkling wine producer in 1836 using French methods from Reims.
After passing through owners including the Saxon State Bank and socialist-era nationalization, the Free State of Saxony restored it in 1999 as Europe's first destination winery, producing 600,000 bottles yearly with tastings, events, and cultural exhibits amid its 25,000-square-meter grounds.
