Verified Schloss Weesenstein

Müglitztal, Germany, Germany

Schloss Weesenstein is a Renaissance castle in Weesenstein, part of Müglitztal in Saxony, Germany, originally built around 1200 as a medieval border fortress against Bohemia and first documented in 1318 under the Burgraves of Dohna.

After the Dohna Feud in 1402, it became a fief of the Margraviate of Meissen and the longtime seat of the von Bünau family from 1406 to 1772, who transformed it into a comfortable residence with expansions, including a stunning Baroque chapel in 1741.

Sold due to financial woes after the Seven Years' War, it passed to the Uckermanns, then Saxon kings like Anthony and John, served as art storage in World War II, and opened as a museum in 1934 under a heritage group, now featuring guided tours of its unique "upside-down" layout, park, and 800-year history.
