Schloss Wolfenbüttel
Wolfenbüttel, Germany, Germany
Schloss Wolfenbüttel in Wolfenbüttel, Germany, is the second-largest surviving castle in Lower Saxony, originating as a moated fortress first documented in 1118 and serving as the main residence for the Dukes of Brunswick-Lüneburg from 1432 until 1753.
Repeatedly damaged by sieges and rebuilt—first in Renaissance style after 1546 destruction, then with a grand Baroque facade in the late 17th century—it features a four-wing layout around a courtyard, preserved moats, and the prominent Hausmannsturm clock tower from 1613.
Today, it houses a gymnasium, the Federal Academy of Arts Education, and a museum showcasing original Baroque state and private chambers with opulent frescoes and ducal history.
