Schloss Wolkenburg
Limbach-Oberfrohna, Germany, Germany
Schloss Wolkenburg is a Baroque castle originating from a late 12th-century medieval fortress perched on a steep rock above the Zwickauer Mulde River in Limbach-Oberfrohna, Saxony, Germany, first mentioned in 1241 as the seat of the Wolkenburg ministerial family.
Transformed into a Renaissance residence around 1700 and further remodeled in classicist style from 1760-1810 by Count Detlev Carl von Einsiedel—who pioneered local iron casting and adorned the park with unique Lauchhammer foundry sculptures—it features a ring wall, Baroque gate tower, three-story main wing with 16th-century window frames, and an oval courtyard.
Owned by the von Einsiedel family for over 300 years until 1945, it served postwar as housing before restoration from 2000, now operating as a museum with period rooms, banquet hall, neo-Gothic library, and event spaces amid one of the Mulde Valley's oldest parks.
