Schloss Wolkenstein
Wolkenstein, Germany, Germany
Schloss Wolkenstein, often called Burg Wolkenstein, is a high medieval castle in Wolkenstein, Saxony, Germany, in the Ore Mountains overlooking the Zschopau Valley, first documented in the 13th century as a ministerial seat of the Lords of Waldenburg protecting trade routes to Bohemia.
After falling to the Wettins as a lapsed fief in 1473, it was expanded as a hunting lodge by Heinrich the Pious around 1500 and converted into a Renaissance palace by his son Elector August around 1550, featuring a 14th-century residential tower, north-south wings, gatehouse, and rock-integrated walls despite damages from the Thirty Years' War.
Used as an administrative seat until the 19th century, it now stands as a picturesque museum showcasing its layered history amid scenic fog-shrouded views.
