Schlossruine Hartenstein
Hartenstein, Germany, Germany
Schlossruine Hartenstein is the picturesque ruin of a medieval spur castle in Hartenstein, Saxony, Germany, first mentioned in 1173 and built around the mid-12th century on a rocky spur above the Zwickauer Mulde valley to guard trade routes like the Salzstraße.
Held by the Schönburg family from 1406 until the 19th century, it evolved from a fortress into a comfortable residence and then a Neo-Gothic palace in the 19th century, earning the nickname "Perle des Erzgebirges."
Nearly destroyed by American bombs on April 20, 1945, during WWII as SS units hid nearby, its remnants were saved from DDR-era demolition and now form a stabilized cultural site with a museum, open-air theater, restored armory, chapel, and hiking paths offering panoramic views.
