Repeatedly captured by Swedes in 1631 and 1635, imperial forces in 1638, Brandenburgers in 1675, and Danes until 1679 during the Thirty Years' War and subsequent conflicts, the structure was ruined by sieges, storms like the 1703 gale that toppled its tower, and eventual abandonment as Sweden prioritized Wismar.
Today the overgrown earthen ramparts and ditches form a scenic enclosure for an open-air stage used for events, blending military history with Poel's peaceful landscape.
