Schmidtburg
Schneppenbach, Germany, Germany
Schmidtburg near Schneppenbach in Germany's Hunsrück region, Rhineland-Palatinate, is one of the area's largest and oldest hill castle ruins, built around 926 by Frankish nobles to defend against Hungarian invasions and first documented in 1084 as the ancestral seat of Emicho, whose heirs adopted the "Wildgrafen" name.
Spanning an upper and lower bailey across a 220-by-73-meter rocky spur in the Hahnenbach river bend at 321 meters elevation, it served as a Wildgrave stronghold until partition in the 13th century, later becoming a Trier Electorate fortress under Archbishop Balduin before French troops razed it in 1688 during the War of the Grand Alliance.
Excavated and stabilized in the 1980s after centuries of burial, the free-access site amid forested trails like the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig and Soonwaldsteig offers hikers panoramic valley views and a tangible link to nearly 1,000 years of medieval history.
