Schmittenhof - Wasserburg
Kirtorf, Germany, Germany
Schmittenhof Wasserburg, also known as Burg Schmitthof, is a former moated castle located in the Gleental valley northwest of Lehrbach, a district of Kirtorf in Hesse's Vogelsbergkreis, Germany.
Built around 1538 by a branch of the Schenck zu Schweinsberg family on the site of a 14th-century deserted village called Reissdorf, it features a main residential building with Renaissance stepped gables, a surrounding wall with three preserved corner towers out of four, and a once-water-filled moat now filled in.
Restored in the late 1970s and remaining private property, the site showcases late medieval and 16th-century architecture including chamfered portals and preserved structural elements, offering a glimpse into noble Hessian history amid scenic countryside.
