Schönhausen Palace
Berlin, Germany, Germany
Schönhausen Palace in Berlin's Pankow district, Germany, began as a Baroque manor built around 1664-1665 by Christian Albrecht von Dohna, later expanded from 1685 by Joachim Ernst von Grumbkow and acquired in 1691 by Elector Frederick III, who transformed it into a royal summer residence with designs by architects Johann Arnold Nering and Eosander von Göthe.
Queen Elisabeth Christine of Prussia used it extensively from 1740-1790, overseeing post-Seven Years' War reconstructions by Johann Boumann that created its current three-winged form, lavish Rococo interiors like the stuccoed ballroom, and formal gardens along the Panke River.
Maintained by the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation, it hosted key events from Prussian coronations to GDR presidencies until reopening to the public in 2009 after restoration.
