Schwarzenburg
Waldkirch, Germany
Schwarzenburg near Waldkirch, Germany, was built between 1110 and 1150 by Conrad von Waldkirch, who became Conrad of Schwarzenberg and founded the noble family of Schwarzenberg.
The castle likely served as both a refuge and a symbol of the Schwarzenberg family's status as free nobles directly subordinate to the Holy Roman Emperor. It is situated on a prominent vantage point visible from the Rhine Valley and remained the family's residence until their line died out in the mid-15th century. After that, it was used as a secondary residence and hunting lodge.
By the late 16th century, the castle had fallen into ruin with only a few walls remaining. The Schwarzenburg was distinct from nearby Kastelburg, which was built later and served different ruling interests. Today, only ruins remain, but the site retains historical importance for its early medieval noble lineage and strategic location overlooking the region.
