Schwarzenfels Castle
Sinntal, Germany, Germany
Schwarzenfels Castle is a medieval hilltop ruin perched at 427 meters above the village of Schwarzenfels in Germany's Sinntal municipality, Main-Kinzig district, on the Spessart forest edge.
First documented around 1280 and acquired by the Lords of Hanau in 1333, this strategic fortress evolved from a defense post into an administrative center, widow's seat, and Renaissance residence with a richly decorated 1621 portal, well, and representative buildings before destruction in the Thirty Years' War.
Partially restored by Hesse with a climbable upper tower featuring a modern spiral staircase and observation deck, it now serves as a youth hostel, cultural monument, and excursion site offering panoramic Rhön and Spessart views amid hiking trails.
