Sehome Hill Arboretum
Bellingham, Washington, United States
Sehome Hill Arboretum in Bellingham, Washington, is a 175-acre natural wooded park adjacent to Western Washington University, established as an arboretum in 1969.
Unlike traditional arboretums, it is a naturally forested area featuring primarily second-growth forest with native and some nonnative plant species typical of the region. The arboretum offers numerous hiking trails with interpretive signs, an 80-foot wooden observation tower with panoramic views of Bellingham Bay, and a historic sandstone tunnel hand-carved in 1923.
The land was originally logged and quarried in the late 1800s before becoming a park around 1922, with formal arboretum development starting in the 1960s through collaboration between the city, university, and a board of governors. Today, it serves as a peaceful natural retreat, educational resource, and popular outdoor recreation spot in the city.
