Serbian Medival Fortress of Zvecan
Serbia, Serbia
Zvečan Fortress is a medieval stronghold perched on an extinct volcano hill overlooking the Ibar River near North Mitrovica in northern Kosovo, under Serbian historical administration, dating back to classical antiquity with possible prehistoric fortifications.
First documented in 1091 during Serb-Byzantine conflicts, it gained prominence in 1093 as Grand Prince Vukan's base for conquering Kosovo from Byzantium, later serving the Nemanjić dynasty as a royal court, prison for rulers like Stefan Uroš III Dečanski who died there in 1331, and strategic hub controlling Trepča mines and caravan routes.
Captured by Ottomans after the 1389 Battle of Kosovo and active until the 18th century, it features thick stone walls, towers, remnants of St. George's Church, and an irregular terrain-adapted layout, now a protected Monument of Culture of Exceptional Importance amid ruins.
