Vrdnik Fortress
Serbia, Serbia
Vrdnik Fortress in Serbia, located on the southern slopes of Fruška Gora mountain near the spa village of Vrdnik, is a well-preserved medieval tower known as Vrdnik Tower or Castellum Rednek, originally part of a larger fortified complex from the 14th century under the Kingdom of Hungary.
Built on possible Roman foundations dating to Emperor Probus around 276-282 AD—with artifacts suggesting an early watchpost—the semicircular keep stands nearly 20 meters tall with massive stone walls, observation slits, buttresses, a drawbridge-protected gate tower, and surrounding ramparts enclosing a 50x60-meter town layout to guard roads from Ruma to the Danube.
Damaged during the 1526 Ottoman conquest of Srem, it later served as an Ottoman outpost before falling into ruin by 1702, and today ranks as a protected cultural monument offering panoramic views of Srem plains amid hiking trails.
