Shavvaz castle
Iran, Iran
Shavvaz Castle is a historic mountain fortress located in the village of Shavvaz in Taft County, Yazd Province, Iran, and it is regarded as one of the oldest and most important rock castles in the country.
The castle was built in the pre-Islamic period, at the end of the Parthian era and the beginning of the Sasanian Empire, and its design clearly reflects Sasanian architectural features such as thick walls, strategic use of the natural rock, and internal divisions for different functions.
It sits on a high limestone rock about 100 meters above the surrounding terrain, covers roughly 5,000 square meters, and was used both as a residential stronghold for local people and as a defensive barrier against raiders and invaders, with steep cliffs on several sides making access very difficult for enemies. The castle is built mainly of stone on the exterior and clay and mud-brick on the interior, with at least three levels.
A ground floor for daily life and storage, an upper floor for residence, and higher areas for storing food and supplies. Shavvaz Castle is one of the main attractions of the ancient village of Shavvaz, which also contains a very old non-Islamic cemetery registered as a national monument, and together these sites make the village a significant but less-known historical destination in central Iran.
