Shaw Nature Reserve in Missouri is a vast ecological preserve spanning over 2,400 acres, managed by the Missouri Botanical Garden.

Established initially in 1925 as a refuge for the garden’s exotic plant collection, it was developed into a diverse mosaic of natural habitats representing the Ozark region, including forests, wetlands, tallgrass prairies, glades, and riparian zones along the Meramec River.

The reserve was transformed from an area impacted by previous land uses into a demonstration site for ecological restoration and conservation, supporting native plant and animal communities within its varied ecosystems. It features over 18 miles of hiking trails that wind through landscapes such as floodplain forests, glades, and meadows, offering a rich environment for wildlife viewing, scientific research, and environmental education.

The reserve also contains historic structures like the Joseph H. Bascom House, built in 1879, and supports efforts to restore and sustain native biodiversity. Its strategic location in an ecological transition zone makes it a key site for understanding regional habitat diversity and the importance of conservation.
