Shimba Hills National Reserve
Kwale County (Coast Province), Kenya
Shimba Hills National Reserve is a protected area located in Kwale County, close to Kenya’s Indian Ocean coast. It is about 33 kilometers southwest of Mombasa and just 15 kilometers from the shoreline. The reserve covers approximately 193 to 300 square kilometers and is famous for its rolling hills, dense coastal rainforest, open grasslands, and beautiful viewpoints over the surrounding landscape.
Shimba Hills is one of the largest coastal forests in East Africa. The area has a mix of rainforests, woodlands, grasslands, wetlands, and river valleys. These diverse habitats support many plant and animal species. Over half of Kenya’s rare plants, including endangered cycads and several types of orchids, are found in the reserve. The scenery is lush and green, especially during the rainy seasons.
The reserve is best known for its large population of African elephants. There are about 500 to 700 elephants living in Shimba Hills. Elephants often stay hidden in the forest but can sometimes be seen at open spots or lookout points. The reserve is also the only place in Kenya where you can see the endangered sable antelope with its dark coat and long, curved horns. Other animals include buffalo, bushbuck, warthog, giraffe, bush pigs, monkeys like the colobus and sykes monkeys, baboons, various antelope species, and smaller animals like bush babies and duikers. Leopards and hyenas are present but rarely seen.
Shimba Hills is a great place for birdwatchers. More than 200 bird species live here, including the Zanzibar red bishop, fish eagle, and various sunbirds. The rich mix of habitats attracts both common and rare birds.
One of the highlights in the reserve is Sheldrick Falls, a 21-meter-high waterfall surrounded by forest. Guided walks are organized to the falls, and visitors can enjoy the cool atmosphere and sometimes swim beneath the water. Other scenic spots include Pengo Hill and Elephant Hill, which offer wide views across the green hills and, on a clear day, even as far as the Indian Ocean or Mount Kilimanjaro.
Popular activities in Shimba Hills National Reserve include:
- Guided game drives: Experience the wildlife and explore the park’s hills and forests, often by 4x4 vehicle.
- Nature walks and hiking: Discover the rainforests and waterfalls on foot with a park guide.
- Birdwatching: Spot both rare and common bird species in the forests and open areas.
- Picnics and viewpoints: Enjoy the scenery from picnic sites and lookout points such as Marere Dam or Pengo Hill.
The reserve is managed by Kenya Wildlife Service together with local communities. Efforts are made to protect both endangered species and the rich plant life. The nearby Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary helps reduce human-elephant conflict by offering elephants a migration route out of the reserve and away from farms.
Shimba Hills is best visited during the dry months from June to October, when trails are easier to walk and animals are more likely to be seen. The reserve is suitable for a day trip from Mombasa or Diani Beach, but there are also options for overnight stays in lodges or at campsites within or near the reserve.
